It can’t be a bad life being a member of the band Blink 182. If their “Urethra Chronicles” video is to be believed, their job involves mainly traveling around the world, being extremely childish, and playing hugely enjoyable punk pop for the masses. Basically a fly-on-the-wall look into that life, the Urethra Chronicles DVD gives little insight into the three Blinks aside from their love of toilet humor and seeming obsession with homosexuality. The music is given frustratingly short shrift aside from the odd snippet of live performance, but you don’t have to be a teenage boy and/or a fan to find some of this very funny. Much, however, will leave the casual observer feeling left out on a series of inside jokes. When they place their humor in the context of the music, though–as with the four promo videos also included–the result is fantastic. The Backstreet Boys pastiche “All the Small Things” not only is the pinnacle both musically and visually but also demonstrates the great Blink 182 irony–that behind the smirking, childish exterior lurk three sensitive souls, just as keen to use their video to pay tribute to their girlfriends as they are to drop their trousers. –Phil Udell

This 2000 TV series borrows heavily from Evangelion, Frankenstein, and The Iron Giant. Takuto, a brilliant college student, follows his girlfriend Maki to the secret lab where her professor is resurrecting an alien cyborg. When the military interferes, the cyborg strikes out, killing Maki and injuring Takuto. A mysterious man who quotes bits of Western literature arranges a new life for the badly disfigured Takuto, who swears to avenge Maki’s death. As Lt. Ryu Soma, he joins Funeral, an elite army unit dedicated to destroying the alien robots that are attacking the Earth. The cyborg befriends the strange girl Harriet, who refers to him as an elf. Taciturn and brusqu, Ryo is not a prepossessing hero; despite his suffering, he lacks the vulnerability that balances Shinji’s alienation in Evangelion. It’s a girl. The first words spoken in Jafar Panahi’s The Circle should be celebratory, but instead the mood of the scene is mournful. The relatives will be furious. Director Jafar Panahi leaves the innocence of his delightful The White Balloon behind in this harrowing, passionate portrait of the plight women endured in Iran before the easing of strict Muslim law. His vision of women scrambling through streets and dodging cops like fugitives in a police state is more of a nightmarish fable than a realist drama, but no less affecting for it. Panahi drifts through the stories of a handful of women recently released from prison (their crimes are left ominously vagu) with an easy grace and an angry sense of injustice that brings us full circle: back to prison, where a cell door shuts with a deafening clang that reverberates through the credits and beyond. –Sean Axmaker

Company B’s harrowing experiences as a combat unit during the Vietnam War come to a close with Tour of Duty’s third season in 1989, which marked the end of this critically acclaimed television series. The episodes contained in this set are among the most dramatic of the entire program’s run, as established and new characters alike meet the brutal realities and futility of the war head-on. Departing from the regular cast this season is Kim Delaney’s Alex Devlin, but among the recurring players is Carl Weathers, as by-the-book Col. Brewster; Kyle Chandler (Early Edition) as Pvt. Griner; Greg Germann of Ally McBeal as the ill-fated Lt. Beller; and Lee Majors as a world-weary and middle-aged PVC (his son Lee Majors II also appears as his character’s son in “Three Cheers for the Orange, White and Blu”). Story-wise, it’s a downbeat season, with episodes delving into the My Lai massacre (a multi-episode arc beginning with “A Bodyguard of Lies”), racial tension (”Odd Man Out”), and finally, the challenges facing vets upon their return to the States (season closers “The Raid” and “Payback”). The solid, unsentimental writing and performances that earmark the series as a whole are in full effect in all 20 episodes of season 3, which netted an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Sound Mixing, and a Viewers for Quality Television Award for series lead Terence Knox. As with the previous Tour of Duty boxed sets, season 3 offers no supplemental features, and replaces the period pop music that dotted the show’s soundtrack with a generic incidental score. While unfortunate, neither factor should prevent viewers from exploring this excellent show. –Paul Gaita

The producers of the American Pie movies pushed their luck with a third slice of their lucrative raunchy comedy franchise, and American Wedding cooked up surprisingly well. It’s the sourest serving of Pie, with half of the original cast missing, and there’s something undeniably desperate about comedic highlights (involving dog poop, a lusty old lady, two strippers to offset the absence of Shannon Elizabeth, and the ill-advised use of a trimming razor) that arise more from obligation than inspiration, on the assumption that another penile mishap is guaranteed to please. And yet, that’s just what this movie does for devoted Pie-munchers: It gives ‘em what they want, especially when the notorious Stifler (Seann William Scott) nearly ruins the frantic nuptials of Jim (Jason Biggs) and his band-camping sweetheart Michelle (Alyson Hannigan). Eugene Levy and Eddie Kaye Thomas also return for some reliable comic relief, but the one who’s laughing most is three-time Pie writer Adam Herz–laughing loudly and often, all the way to the bank. –Jeff Shannon

It’s enlightening to view Tim Burton’s Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton’s eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in theaters. The idea of invading aliens ray gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, and the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed to be spread thin on the big screen. On video, however, the movie’s kooky humor seems a bit more concentrated. The Earth actors (most of whom get zapped or kidnapped for alien science experiments) include Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Michael J. Fox, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, Tom Jones, and Pam Grier. The digital video disc features an isolated track for Danny Elfman’s score, as well as a few other clever and nasty little Martian surprises. –Jim Emerson
